Human brain is about 1.5 quart in volume, that
is approximately 500 % larger than any other primates.
At birth the brain occupies nearly 14 % of our body
weight and it consumes 70 % of the bodies total energy
intake. As an adult the human brain occupies proximally
2 % of our total body weight. |
Poor nutrition adversely affects the brain function of
any mammals in two major ways:
1. Insufficient energy and insufficient essential nutrients. These are nutrients
that our body can not make or synthesize in quantities sufficient to meet our
needs. When these essential nutrients are not present in critical facets of
our brain, it may create permanent impaired brain functions.
Phosphatydilcholine is one of those essential nutrients
that normally circulates in the blood and is taken up in
all the cells of the body . But in the brain there is a
unique way to insure this essential nutrient to our nerve
cells and receive adequate supplies of the circulating
phosphatydilcholine. Researchers have found a special protein
molecule within our brain capillaries that is accentually
able to trap the circulating phosphatydilcholine and then
carefully transport it across the blood brain barrier into
our brains, and once in the brain the phosphatydilcholine
is incorporated in our own brains functions and cells,
it forms a major component of our neural membranes.
Another very interesting function of the phosphatydilcholine,
once it is transported into the brain, that is. used by
a special group of nerve cells called neurons which release
phosphotydilcholine into synapses as a neural transmitter,
or nerve talk between nerve cells . If you can picture
these nerve cells in extremely activity and are firing
frequently in the milliseconds releasing large quantities
of these special essential acetylcholine, the axons and
dendrites depends on their ability to make adequate transmitters
in order to keep up with brain activity that is required
to receive a large amount of phosphatydilcholine from the
blood stream.
In the absence of these phosphatydilcholine the ability of your nerve cells
to transmit messages from one cell across the synapse to another cell is impaired
and the neural cell membranes are depleted of the phosphatydilcholine causing
permanent cell damage. However, if you have adequate supplementation of phosphatydilcholine,
these messages can be amplified and the membrane structures are maintained
giving your extraordinary mind’s ability to think, reason, and recall.
To guard against these low levels of phosphatydilcholine and to restore the
phosphatydilcholine blood levels, you need to take 3-5 grams of phosphatydilcholine
daily which also helps control and support normal cellular membrane composition
and repair. You will have sufficient essential acetylcholine for the synapse
biosynthesis, providing you with excellent mental health. According to a prescription
drug Phoschol trademarked in the 2002 PDR, pure 70% phosphatydilcholine is
able to sustain normal blood levels of essential acetylcholine levels for approximately
10-12 hours .
The biology of the brain requires certain Natural Essential Phospholipids for
normal function of an aging brain. Phosphatydilserine is one of those essential
phospholipids (PS) which has no functions elsewhere in our tissues and organs,
but it is most concentrated in the brain, wrote Dr. Parris M. Kidd, PhD in
his Book entitled “Phosphatydilserine” published by Kidd’s
in 1998.
At University of Albuquerque, New Mexico, research brain specific compounds
researchers are able to use phosphatydilserine to help neurons from aging and
restored normal memory. An Italian study showed that usage of phosphatydilserine
for six months statistically improved the behavior and the cognitive parameters
in a group of 494 elderly patients with moderate to severe cognitive decline.
Dr. Thomas H. Cook III, PhD, showed that phosphatydilcholine both improved
the memory in 50 elderly woman significantly better than placebo; For many
centuries in the Far East Chinese herbalists have been using a rare Chinese
club moss found in very cold regions of China for fever and inflammation .
Only recently scientist have recovered a remarkable active ingredient of this
Club Moss called Huperzine A, this compound appears to have the power to sharpen
the mind and ward of any devastating effects of memory robbing disease such
as Alzheimer.
The mental improvement discovered from Huperzine A appears
to come from it’s ability to inhibit the break down
of aceylcholine, a brain chemical that is essential for
the memory. For year’s Chinese herbalist have been
using huperzine A as a memory enhancing herb that benefits
most by increasing alertness and a much improved short
and long term memory retention. A double blind clinical
trial carried out in China demonstrated that huperzine
A is both safe and effective for long term treatment of
Alzheimer’s and dementia. This extract Huperzine
A is active in the brain for approximately six hours at
a dose of two micro grams per kilogram with no remarkable
negative side effects known.
Dr. Zangara, A. reported in the Journal Pharmacology Biochemistry
and Behavior, volume #75 in 2003, published that Huperzine
A is safe for both humans and animals without any unexpected
toxicity.
Another super supplement is called Bacopa Monniera which
has been used as Ayurvedic system of medicine for centuries
in India. Additionally it has always been used as a brain
tonic to enhance memory development, learning and concentration.
Main pharmacological active compound in Bacopa are alkaloids,
saponins and sterols compound seem to provide Bacopa’s
ability to enhance nerve impulse transmission enhancing
the neurons activity, neuronal synthesis, and restoration
of synaptic activities and ultimately the nerve impulse
transmission it self. Bacopa Monniera has been studied
extensively for its clinical effects on the acute and chronic
cognitive functions. In adults it appears that long term
usage and administration of Bacopa is associated with improved
cognitive enhancing effects as shown in a double blind
placebo controlled trial a group of Australian Researchers.
